From Tree to Textile: Block Printing from Nature's Motifs

Immerse yourself in botanicals, block printing and design in this 4-day slow creative retreat with textile designer Skye McNeill of OROZCO Studio. Block printing is one of the oldest and most accessible forms of print making. It is also one of the slowest, allowing artists time and space to connect with their work.

Using the beautiful grounds of Plum Nelli as our inspiration source, we will observe, sketch and photograph the plants, animals and landscape as it inspires us. We will then transform these motifs into carved rubber blocks and print them onto textile yardage. We'll enjoy a beautiful farm-to-fork meal together each day, and with ample free time after art-making for exploring the hidden gem Marrowstone Island. Go for sunset walks, indulge in delicious local cuisine, build new friendships.

I will be teaching a two day block printing workshop at Wildcraft Studio School focused on the Bauhaus design principles and its textile designers.

Drawing inspiration from the history of Bauhaus Textiles, students will be introduced to repeat block-printing using a geometric and structured approach. Day 1 will be spent exploring the weavings of Anni Albers & other Bauhaus textile artists, while developing drawings and designs suitable for block printing. Negative & positive space will be emphasized alongside bold, graphic expressions. Day 2 will teach students how to carve blocks, mix inks and print on fabric. Each student will leave with a completed piece of patterned yardage.
